The development first known defense spray aerosol first originated in 1969 with a company called Aerko International Corporation (AIC). The original goal was to produce an aerosol spray that would be packaged in the container of a small flashlight. The chemical ingredient of choice was, capsicum (OC). OC, is a chili oil that its main purpose is to cause coughing, a sensation of burning skin, and water in the eye. The purpose for its development was to avoid potential dog attacks or person to person aggression. Dogs presumably are less affected by traditional tear gas.

It was concluded that CS is an irritant safer than CN, because it took much less amounts of CN to reach a lethal level of potential that CS.

CS and CN, by themselves are not as emotional as when it is their duty with OC.
