Update and reset your Adtran Netvanta 1224STR -

Updating the firmware on a Adtran Netvanta 1224STR PoE switch can seem a daunting task if you have not done before. Following these steps will help walk you through the process

** NOTE ** If you are using the improved function pack is required Adtran account with valid purchase to validate downloading improved packaging capabilities.

To complete this How-To, you need the following:

  • A computer that has a network connection and an available COM port. If no COM port is available, a USB to COM port can be replaced.
  • A power switch with at least one free port for Netvanta router is preferred, but a crossover cable can also be used.
  • A program you can use to console into the router.
  • A TFTP server solution for your computer. You will use this to transfer your router's firmware.
  • A serial cable Adtran This is a requirement to gain access to the router.

The first thing to do is to download the latest firmware from Adtran. Firmware updates are available on their website. After downloading the firmware you will ever install Putty and Solarwinds TFTP if you have not already. Move the firmware you downloaded in the TFTP-Root folder located on your computer's C: drive. Make sure Solarwinds TFTP is running.

Connect the serial cable from the COM port of the computer to the console port of Adtran router. We'll want to run a Cat5 RJ45 (Ethernet cable) from the port Eth 0/1 of a network switch router. Go ahead and take this time to find, in addition, the IP address of the computer. You will need this in a few minutes. A simple way to do this is to run the ipconfig command at the Windows command. In our case, the computer is on IP 192.168.1.133.

go ahead and start up PuTTY. Select a type of serial connection to a baud rate of 90. Hit connect. You'll want to do this before you start the router as you only have a few seconds to enter bootstrap first time you start your router.

Now connect your router and escape hit. You can upload in bootstrap mode. From here you can start to change the switch. The first command you want to execute are the following:

bootstrap # erase file system

This will erase all files in the file system. Continue? [y or n] y

file system cancellation. This may take a few minutes ...

This will delete the old firmware on Netvanta. Do not do this if you have a configuration on the router you need! Once this is finished we can start the transfer of a new version of the firmware on the router. Use the following commands to transfer the firmware:

bootstrap IP address 192.168.1.54 #

bootstrap # copy tftp flash

remote host address? 192.168.1.133

filename Source? N1224RA-13-15-00.biz

filename Destination? [N1224RA-13-15-00.biz] ** ** hit enter

Start TFTP transfer ...

received 13711081 bytes.

complete transfer.

Here you specify the IP address of the router as 192.168.1.54. You can change this to whatever suits your needs. Let's say your router to copy a file in flash memory TFTP. The address of the remote host is our PC with the firmware installed on it. The source file name is the name of the downloaded firmware. copy and paste this with extension.biz file. You will then be able to begin the transfer

The next command is:

bootstrap the boot system flash N1224RA-13-15-00.biz #

primary image: NonVol: /N1224RA-13-15-00.biz

backup image: none

# startup bootstrap

This will save the firmware for the router and let the router to boot from it. Once the router is started up it is over!
