Telerik Sitefinity can replace Microsoft SharePoint? -

Introduction:

Although the two products have similarities and Telerik increasingly turns more SharePoint capabilities with each new version, in our opinion, there are still two purposes distinct:

Sitefinity is geared for content management of a public website

SharePoint is geared for document management at the enterprise level and the collaboration of an intranet site.

We have several projects in which we are heavily involved with both products, so you stay up-to-date on both products.

Sitefinity is a great product with a great future; Telerik continues to improve the product with a keen eye to improve the product to address the most important aspects of content management.

SharePoint is a product of great size, that is too expensive for its features and serious shortcomings. Our position of SharePoint is to remain only on the surface with a configured implementation without customization. When we attempt to customize the product, we find quickly is hard if not impossible to manage (eg. Custom Shapes with InfoPath stop and restart the entire Sharepoint service because a DLL update is introduced). There are some very nice features that are hard to beat, and then we use, but vehemently warn our customers about the customization pitfalls.

Sitefinity It can be used for document management and collaboration?

Yes, you can, but the biggest is the realization, the stronger the case becomes for SharePoint features that Sitefinity not currently have (eg. Custom Lists, data entry spreadsheet, sites nested within sites, the ability to save a model of an entire site hierarchy including data for easy reuse, and granular backup scheme that allows the individual document recovery).

Will Sitefinity continue to challenge Microsoft until the tides change?

I'm sure Telerik can and want to take on Microsoft SharePoint. If you look at the line of Telerik products, they have consistently implemented a better tool visual then Microsoft even when Microsoft's own design (eg. RadControls, Sitefinity, Web user interface testing, etc.).

Sitefinity can do it in the near future?

No, I do not think so. Telerik is taking their time to get Sitefinity v4.0 right tackle their current base of core customers: the content management web site. That's where they should be focused and evolving. No great display capabilities, which can and add features that will compete directly with SharePoint.

What a feature of SharePoint would want to see in Sitefinity?

Let me copy the HTML content including images and paste them into a content block where the copied images are automatically handled within Sitefinity. So a quick check C to copy and Control V to paste and the content is done. I do not want to have to save each graphic or image individually to my desktop, then load them into a library of Sitefinity images, then create a reference to each one on the inside of the text contained in each strategic location.

Sitefinity is sold to customers because the time they save content management within Sitefinity has an ROI of a couple of days. A CMS package breaks the barrier to the creation of new content or update existing content. You can log in and go to a module of content appropriate to add the specific content, without worrying about page design and structure of the coherent web site, it is done for them.

However, if you are trying to take existing content (eg. HTML with images), there can be a significant effort to 're-create' content when images are formatted content in the barrier ... it is still quite high.
